Petey Possum's Hangout Grand Opening Reading/Signing!

I'd like to announce that Lizzie Fox-Top and Cousin Ann's Stories for Children are now available, signed, at the brand-new children's bookstore Petey Possum's Hangout in Oxford, PA!

I was honored and delighted to be invited to do a celebratory reading and signing at their Grand Opening last Friday, June 3.  And let me tell you, what a wonderful store.  It is owned and run by the most charming family, who have stocked it with a great range of picture books, middle grade fiction, and even some fun knick-knacks and toys for summer! I was particularly impressed with their selection of modern, creative, and beautiful picture books and inclusion of not only English, but Spanish picture books as well (Oxford has a high Hispanic population). I hope I can go visit this bookstore again soon! Pictures will be posted when I get them.

On another note, I was also invited to speak at my high school's Career Day last Wednesday. I discussed with eleventh graders what it is like to be an art teacher and picture book writer/illustrator. I had several aspiring artists and designers in my audience, even one student who is thinking of going to my college alma mater, VCU! It was also great to see all my old teachers. While a lot of people hated high school, I'll always value the time I spent there. I have many happy memories of being a band nerd, hanging out in the art room, and getting into trouble all over the place (that's pretty easy in a conservative Catholic school!)

Big Art Show! and Lecture at CCP tomorrow

So the Big Art Show has been up at The Caring Center for over a week now and it's looking really fabulous.  Here are some pictures:

After a professor from Community College of Philadelphia saw this show last week, she found me in the lobby and invited me to speak to her early childhood education class tomorrow.  I am excited but nervous.  I am used to talking about my illustration now, but I will be talking about teaching tomorrow.  Let's just hope I know even a little bit more about teaching than the education students!

Team River Rat!

Made this t-shirt logo for a friend's work baseball team.  The concept was my friend's and I executed it. I thought it was a cool/funny idea anyway, I must say. Go River Rats!  (Whatever a River Rat is.  I kind of picture a malnourished otter but thought that wouldn't be nearly as threatening on a sports shirt).

Ah, The Taste of Writing Again!

Sooo blog, I kind of forgot about you for awhile! Sorry about that! I have been studiously and obsessively re-drafting my latest story (the one that has been on the backburner since before Lizzie was written) for the past few days and I've finally gotten over the "hump"--which always seems to be the ending--and it's now in a place where I am REALLY EXCITED.  A delectable morsel to whet your palate if you wish:

    The next day, Princess Zooey and Muffy arrived at the field.
    BRR BRR BRR! played the trumpets. “Let the derby BEGIN!”
    Princess Zooey tore into the arena at full speed. Suddenly--RIP! A flat tire! 
    “Oh no!” Zooey thought as she sat in fear and watched first one car strike out, then another.
    Soon, it was down to just Zooey and the last car.  “What will I do? I can’t get any speed with this tire!” Zooey thought. Just then, she remembered what was so special about King Norbert’s Wienermobile...

Happy Early Valentine's Day: Someone Wants Me!

Dear Readers,
So I got invited to do a signing/reading at a kids' literary festival in the spring.  I am pretty excited because I had left a copy of Lizzie Fox-Top at this store, hoping they would carry it, but had trouble getting in touch with the owner after that.  I didn't expect to hear back, but then I got this invite!  It sounds like a fun gig; I hope I get to do it.

In other news, you should probably buy my new book if you haven't already.  I'm just sayin'.  Thanks.
